Etsy layers three mandatory fees on each sale. The $0.20 listing fee is charged when you list and again each time a multi-quantity listing renews after a sale. The 6.5% transaction fee applies to the total the buyer pays — item price plus shipping. The payment processing fee depends on your country: 3% + $0.25 in the US, 4% + £0.20 in the UK (this calculator has presets for both).
Then there's Offsite Ads: Etsy advertises your listings on Google and social platforms, and when a sale is attributed to those ads you pay 15% (or 12% once your shop passes $10,000 in trailing-year sales, at which point participation becomes mandatory). Combined, mandatory fees typically take 10–12% of an order before Offsite Ads — and over 25% with them.
Pricing handmade work properly
The classic mistake on Etsy is pricing from materials alone. Your receipt should absorb materials, packaging, actual postage, and fees while leaving margin for your labor. Use the break-even figure as an absolute floor — the minimum item price at your shipping charge — then price for profit above it.
